VMware to Proxmox Migration & Server Upgrades

A client was running aging VMware infrastructure with outdated Windows Server VMs. The goal was to modernize the hypervisor layer and bring all server instances up to current supported versions.

Steps Taken

1Audited the existing VMware environment and documented all VM configurations, networking, and storage dependencies
2Stood up a Proxmox VE cluster and configured storage, networking, and backup policies
3Migrated VMs from VMware to Proxmox using staged cutover to minimize downtime
4Upgraded Windows Server VMs from legacy versions to Windows Server 2019
5Validated Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and application services post-migration
6Decommissioned the old VMware hosts after confirming stability

Results

✓Improved backup reliability
✓Reduced downtime during migration
✓Eliminated unsupported OS risk
